Working for Ohio Learn and Earn bit the big one

CLICK THIS TEXT TO VISIT THIS BLOG'S CURRENT SITE

I haven't sough out corroborating evidence to backup this post about Ryan's experience with the Issue 3/legalize gambling/bring casinos to Cleveland and slots to racetracks Ohio Learn and Earn campaign's petition signature drive last summer, but I do recall reading, I think in the Toledo Blade maybe?, that there were some problems with OLE not paying people after November's ballot loss. I can't find a link at the moment.

Read Ryan's post anyway and decide:

Truth or fiction? Let's hear some chiming in. And also, don't forget to ask: who knew what, who was responsible for what and who should feel ashamed of themselves (not because of the issue itself, but because of how poorly those how wanted to make it succeed treated or allowed others to treat other human beings; making peace with yourself because you worked for OLE is a different post).

H/t BFD.

It was here in Toledo and it was reported in the Toledo City Paper, as well as on Glass City Jungle.

I'd say what Ryan described to be true compared to people I know who also worked for Learn and Earn even as signature gatherers.

Thank you! I search GCJ's search function, and Technorati and Google Blog search but I just couldn't get the post - I knew it was there.

Thanks again.

I was one of those lowly petition signing name gatherers and I got paid just fine. It took maybe two weeks and I earned $100 because I only did it for the last weekend.
I liked the process because it was getting names on the ballot to let Ohioans decide if they wanted the slots at the racetracks (unlike the sales tax issue). So I have no issues with working for them and I in fact did get paid even though no one knew me very well.
I have to throw in my two cents about you running for office (different post). If you run I will work too lol. I managed State Senate, State Legislator, Mayoral and my own campaigns in Maryland and something tells me you would be a dynamite legislator. So keep me posted :-) We need good people!

That's interesting, Carole, re: OLE. I've been told that some people actually are able to make an annual salary by getting paid to get signatures. I hate to sound so naive but I really had no idea.

As for elected office, does that mean you don't think posing in the dancers for democracy tshirt will be too lascivious a photo for oppo?

Aw, thanks Carole. Someone who I respect whom I know reads the blog feels a bit differently about it than I do and I really listen to her a lot so...you know. But still, I'm confident in my choice to have donned the shirt. I know where my mind was when I was deciding to do it and that will just have to be that. But I do have a few college and high school buddies I might have to outlive first if I'm going to run...;)

Jill,

Since you have such a tight working relationship with so many people at the Ohio Democratic Party Headquarters in Columbus, wouldn't it behoove you to get a comment from Todd Hoffman (current online communication director for the ODP who had the same basic job description while working for OLE in the past).

I'm sure Mr. Hoffman would supply all sorts of insider information to you now that you've obtained insider status. I'm wondering if Hoffman will continue to distance himself from his past connection with OLE by avoiding comment. I'm also curious to see how you interact with Hoffman who used to practically be your arch enemy in 2006 (How many reasons did you come up with to vote against Issue 3?)

Regardless, it would be interesting to see how Mr. Hoffman responds or doesn't respond. I remember how Hoffman touted OLE as practically the next coming of the Messiah with regards to funding education (or the first coming of the Messiah, depending on one's religious and/or spiritual perspective).

There Jill, I've set you up. You can show off how you've obtained insider status with the ODP as well as tout your religious/spiritual beliefs, your disdain for legalized gambling AND your support of your top issue of education.

What more could you ask for Jill? Maybe you could insert a few bits about how suburban life contrasts with urban inner city life. Now fire off that email to Todd Hoffman and see what he does. He can see the urban poor go in and out of Grant Hospital every day from his vantage point of the ODP HQ (if he chooses to notice).

It sure seems like Hoffman and other Democrats (maybe even yourself) are looking the other way when it comes to dealing with (or even understanding) the urban poor. But, I guess Dancers for Democracy and legalized gambling must have some kind of importance compared to statewide Democrats helping the urban poor.

Umm - don't know who the anon is above this quote but it's clearly no one who knows me or the ODP. They have little love for me. Actually, they have no love for me. I'm quite sure they roll their eyes when they hear my name or my blog's name.

But you know - everyone's entitled to their version of reality so Anon, good luck with yours.

That was the most perplexing reply I have seen in a while.

Thanks for picking up on this, Jill.

You bet, Ryan. If I had my druthers, you'd have media crawling all over you and digging more deeply to find more folks who could tell similar tales. However, as you can see, my blogging friend Carole, for whom I have a lot of respect, had an acceptable experience getting sigs and getting paid for it. So...you know - it was a statewide operation. No doubt everything wasn't monitored or managed the same.
