From OpenCongress, we learn that HR 1357 attempts to do what State Rep. Josh Mandel and Shannon Jones want to do. Here's the Thomas listing:
H.R.1357
Title: To require divestiture of current investments in Iran, to prohibit future investments in Iran, and to require disclosure to investors of information relating to such investments.
Sponsor: Rep Ros-Lehtinen, Ileana [FL-18] (introduced 3/6/2007) Cosponsors (16)
Latest Major Action: 3/6/2007 Referred to House committee. Status: Referred to the Committee on Financial Services, and in addition to the Committees on Oversight and Government Reform, and Education and Labor, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
So - if the federal bill moves forward, we dump the state one? Do the states want this bill? How many corporations are affected?
Well, check here and here for starters.
Anyone know anything more? I believe this bill is intended to tighten up already existing sanctions but I don't see how it doesn't obviate the need for a state law.

That is an interesting find. Kudos. I noticed that one of the co-sponsors, and the only one from Ohio, is Rep. Steve Chabot, R-Oh-01, Cincinnati.
Shannon Walker Jones, the state rep from SWOhio who is working on the bill with Josh Mandel, used to be on Chabot's staff. I don't know the party line breakdown on the U.S. House co-sponsors, but I thought I saw quite a few very, very conservative GOPers. Rohrbacher and Blunt were on the list. I don't think any House leaders were involved from either D or R side. And 16 co-sponsors does not indicate a great deal of support -- however, it could catch fire if Iran does something terrible. I wonder: Are you and I the only two people in Ohio interested about trade, foreign investment, Middle East policy and pensions?
That's interesting about Shannon Jones.
yeah - you know - it sounds all good in a headline, but again - I feel as though that Josh is just solidfying this very superficial sense of him rather than offering up more substance. I feel like I'm putting him down - but I really don't mean to - I think the guy is earnest. But I don't think he's using caution in the best possible ways. And frankly, I think, in his young career, it's going to be worse to offer something that simply won't work or doesn't need to be in existence than it would be to get behind other people's work or work on enforcing what's already out there.
Also - the focus is awfully national in scope - and for a guy who's accused of being overly ambitious without any work in politics beyond the city council (which wasn't a lengthy engagement due to his tour in Iraq), I don't know.
Personally, I like him, I would almost say, very much.
But as a politician, I don't know.
As my rep - he's been extremely responsive to me personally and that goes a long way.
I'd just like to see him make better choices.
We'll see.
The Federal bill does not obviate the need for the Ohio bill. The Federal bill calls for divestment by U.S. Government retirement plans. The Ohio bill does likewise for Ohio state government retirement plans.
