Reason #57 to VOTE NO on ISSUE 3

CLICK THIS TEXT TO VISIT THIS BLOG'S CURRENT SITE

You might have a problem and not even know it, chalking it up to other issues, all the while messing with your life and everyone's around you. For what? To help make wealthy people wealthier?

Take this test from Gambler's Anonymous:

1. Did you ever lose time from work due to gambling?

2. Has gambling ever made your home life unhappy?

3. Did gambling affect your reputation?

4. Have you ever felt remorse after gambling?

5. Did you ever gamble to get money with which to pay debts or otherwise solve financial difficulties?

6. Did gambling cause a decrease in your ambition or efficiency?

7. After losing, did you feel you must return as soon as possible and win back your losses?

8. After a win, did you have a strong urge to return and win more?

9. Did you often gamble until your last dollar was gone?

10. Did you ever borrow to finance gambling?

11. Have you ever sold anything to finance gambling?

12. Were you reluctant to use "gambling money" for normal expenditures?

13. Did gambling make you careless of the welfare of yourself and your family?

14. Did you ever gamble longer than you had planned?

15. Have you ever gambled to escape worry or trouble?

16. Have you ever committed, or considered committing, an illegal act to finance gambling?

17. Did gambling cause you to have difficulty in sleeping?

18. Do arguments, disappointments or frustrations create within you an urge to gamble?

19. Did you ever have an urge to celebrate any good fortune by a few hours of gambling?

20. Have you ever considered self destruction as a result of your gambling?

According to GA, most compulsive gamblers will answer yes to at least seven of these questions.

VOTE NO TO ISSUE 3.

I answered yes to exactly two questions.

So, why should I be made into a criminal, or forced to flee to a more tolerant state or province? It's not my fault that a few other people are incapable of gambling responsibly.

Jason, I can't force you to change your mind. And vice versa. But I will respect your opinion and we can vote our own ways when the time comes. And, of course, you can always commment in opposition here. :)

I keep wondering why a gambler would want to play a game that was so stacked against him -- all thae money they're throwing around (they've offered millions to Cincinnati now) has got to come from the coins that individual players are dropping in the slots -- and therefore, it's not available for payoffs.

It's the thrill, the thought, that you might win. That's the thing about addiction, no matter what activity you're addicted to. Because ultimately the addiction is to the "high" or rush you get - all the adrenaline pumped just because you think something is going to happen, whether it does or not. Really, it's a fatal flaw few people lack entirely. And it's a flaw waiting for opportunity. Which I will have no hand in providing.

We are losing billions a year and nobody wants to do anything about it except the racetracks. I will Vote Yes on Issue #3. This is my only chance to have hope for my kids to goto college. This is a wonderful issue and will help all %100 of Ohio sutdents. I hope everyone will votr Yes on Issue #3.

The previous "Anon" poster clearly has not read the actual amendment. The only guarantee it offers is that the top 5% will receive grants after 2 years (beginning in 2009), and they will only last for 12 years. The other 95% of students are promised exactly nothing. There is no dollar amount, no time frame. Banking on gambling to provide anything for your family has got to be the stupidest financial decision I've ever heard of. If this was really about scholarships, we'd do this like every other state, and auction of the casino licenses for billions of dollars.

The 9 casino owners have duped yet another citizen. Good for them.

Obviously, the previous Anon poster has not actually read the amendment. The only thing it guarantees is grants to the top 5% of students for 12 years. After that, the grants are gone, and no one is guaranteed anything. Don't believe me? Read the amendment and show me one place where it mentions a dollar amount for the scholarships that is guaranteed, or a time frame in which they will be paid. It doesn't exist.

As for losing money to other states, do your research. For every $1 a city gets in revenue for a casino, that same city will spend $3 on related services. Think it's smart to trade in $3 for a return of $1? Sounds about as logical as banking on gambling to get your kids into college.

The casino owners have duped you, knowing that you'll blindly listen to the commercials and not do your research. I encourage you, read the actual amendment. You'll change your mind.
