Reason #40 to VOTE NO on ISSUE 3

This reason was revealed to me while I tried to find information on how Scott Wolstein and Robert Stark feel about Issue 3/Ohio Loses and I Leave constitutional amendment, as well as maybe some of the individual Ratners (contrary to what it might seem like, I have only the deepest depths of disappointment and not hatred or dislike or contempt for the men and women who make up Forest City; my youngest son went to Ratner Montessori and we gave money to it and we loved it; I worked with the wife of one of the Ratners for many years and she was exceptional; the Ratners and the Millers have given good plenty of times to our area, but I vehemently disagree with FCE's choice to seek profits via gambling, here or anywhere and I have serious questions about how they justify it, given all we know about the reasons why it won't work here; otherwise, I have no specific or personal animosity toward any of these individuals). During that endeavor, information about this event, to be hosted by the Cleveland Professional 20/30 Club, popped up:
Ohio's House Advantage: Legalized Gambling and Its Impact on Ohio's Future presented by thunder::tech [Jason Therrien's highly successful company is a platinum level sponsor of the 20/30, and his wife, Holly, is on the 20/30 Membership Committee, talk about putting your time and money where your hopes are re: keeping younger generations here and involved]

The election is a month away! Join the 20/30 Club for a panel discussion of the proposed Learn and Earn Amendment before you visit the polls this November. Dave Pignanelli of WKSU will lead experts in the community, including Peter Lawson Jones, Ed Morrison, and Rob Walgate, in discussing the benefits and disadvantages of the proposed amendment and decide if Ohio truly has the "house advantage" in this economic gamble. Not registered to vote? On-site voter registration sponsored by the League of Women voters will also be available for your convenience. Registration and networking begins at 5.30, the panel starts at 6.30. Light appetizers served, and a cash bar is available.

Now, let's look at the speakers.
Ed Morrison writes frequently about how poor a deal Issue 3 is.
Cuyahoga County Commissioner, Peter Lawson Jones appears to be a slots proponent.
And Rob Walgate. Rob Who? Rob. Walgate.
Boy - did that name look familiar to me.
I googled him and found this. And I knew I'd seen it before - I'd read it before. But why? And where?
So I googled via Technorati (how's that for mixing up verbage) my own blog and got zip. But that Technorati search on your own blog doesn't always work so I then went to Google itself and used its blog search and indeed, I had written about Mr. Walgate right here, on 2/9/06. Walgate was advocating for the Ohio public school state standards for science to retain language that would allow intelligent design to be taught. He advocated that proponents of the retention of the language stop using the words "intelligent design" and instead frame the issue as one of "intellectual honesty" and "freedom of speech."
As you may recall, Walgate and those that follow his thinking lost.
But now? Oy. I'm hanging my head because the Ohio Roundtable, for whom Walgate works as a "HeartReach Team," is on the same side as me. I hate it when that happens (although I secretly love it too). And so Walgate will be at the 20/30 event as an opponent to Issue 3. And, if you read this, well, his story is kind of powerful.
So, see? Save me from a life of consorting with that other end of the spectrum, please.

Jill,
Glad we are standing together on this issue. I am not sure how much of my personal story I will get into Tuesday evening, I spend most of my time these days discussing the negative effects gambling has on a community and also how the economic model doesn't work. So many flaws exist in the Learn and Earn proposal that it is easy to point out the negatives. (Which you have done a great job pointing out.) However, if the moment presents itself, I will take the opportunity to talk about how I lived 6 years ago and the nightmare I put my family through.
Will you be there Tuesday? Would love to say hello in person.
RW
Hi Rob - Thanks very much for your gracious comment.
No - I won't be there Tuesday night for a variety of reasons, but all personal! Yom Kippur is Monday, so I'll be getting over the fast and the holiday. My kids are in religious school until 6pm on Tuesday AND, well, ahem, I'm too old!! Way over 20 and 30. Umm, and 40.
But I think it's a great program and seriously, I'm sure you are an excellent person to have on that panel. Thank you for taking the time to do events like the 20/30 clubs.
Good luck and I'll be looking for others to report on it. Maybe even the PD??
Thanks for reading and leaving a comment.
